FIU Splits Friday Games at Felsberg Field

Panthers move to 15-7 on the season


MIAMI (March 8, 2019) – The FIU softball team split a pair of games on Friday to officially open the FAU/FIU Invitational at Felsberg Field.
 
The Panthers opened the day with a 2-1 victory over North Dakota State, before dropping a 6-3 decision to Purdue to close out Friday. FIU moves to 15-7 on the year, after the split.

Megan Kugelmann pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just one run to pick up the win over NDSU and improve to 5-1. Allison Muraskin pitched the final 1.2 innings against the Bison for her second save of the season. Kendahl Dunford was dealt the loss against Purdue after allowing six runs in six innings.
 
FIU was led by Natalie Orcutt at the plate, after the senior went 4-for-7 with four hits, two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Madison Lewis smashed her first collegiate homer against the Bison, with a solo shot to left field.
 
The Panthers continue the weekend-long FAU/FIU Invitational on Saturday, hosting Stony Brook (4:30 p.m.) and East Carolina (6:45 p.m.).  Live stats for tomorrow's games can be found here. FIU earned a victory in the first game of the day, as the Panthers tamed the Bison with a 2-1 victory. After NDSU jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth, before FIU quickly responded with a Lewis homer to left center to tie the game. An Orcutt single to the left side allowed Jackie Schoff to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, before Muraskin slammed the door and picked up her second save of the season.
 
In the night capper, Purdue jumped ahead 4-0 after three innings, before plating two more insurance runs in the sixth frame. FIU earned three runs in its last at bat, after Orcutt doubled down the line for the first run before a throwing error scored two more the next at bat. The Boilermakers brought in Alex Echazarreta to earn the final two outs however, as she secured the 6-3 win for Purdue.

After the FAU/FIU Invitational, the Panthers will host Notre Dame on Wednesday, March 13 at Felsberg Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. ET.
