CORAL GABLES, Florida (April 13, 2019) -
Clarissa Cutliff earned her third victory in the high jump this outdoor season and
Terrisa Russell placed first in the hammer, highlighting FIU's performance at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables.
Cutliff, a senior from Orlando, jumped 1.82m, not far off her personal best and NCAA second ranked jump of 1.85m from earlier this season at UCF.
Kenflore Atilus also earned points for FIU in the event, placing eighth.
Russell, a senior as well, saw success in both the hammer and discus. In the hammer, Russell took the victory with a throw of 62.55m, a PR of .07m. She then placed second in the discus with a throw of 56.06m, and
Gabrielle Rains earned fifth with a mark of 52.23m. For Rains it was a personal best of .13m.
Trinavia Williams finished sixth in the hammer with a mark of 53.96m.
Freshman
Rayquel Berry placed fifth in the long jump, with a mark of 5.74m. It's the fourth time the first-year Panther has earned points for FIU this year.
In her first 1500m,
Sherilene Gelderblom ran 4:40.42 for fourth place out of 28 runners.
In the javelin,
Asha James placed second with a throw of 46.32m, only behind Madison Wiltrout of UNC.
Samantha Ebanks placed fourth in the heptathlon, finishing with 4,765 points.
The men's side saw strong performances from
Reed Service,
Patston Stewart and
Akeem Simmons. Service placed third in the long jump with a jump of 7.53m. Stewart placed sixth among college athletes in the 200m, and fifth in the 100m. Simmons placed eighth among college runners in the 400m.
In the 1500m,
Daniel Areces set a personal best, crossing the line in 4:16.28, besting his time from UCF at the end of March.
Queshun Riggins continued his strong freshman campaign with a fifth place mark in the triple jump.

The Panthers will get set to head to Atlanta next weekend for the Georgia Tech Invite.
