MIAMI (June 4, 2019) – Austin Shenton was selected 156th overall in the fifth round by the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday afternoon, becoming FIU's first Panther taken in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Shenton, a Bellingham, Washington native, is the highest Panther taken since Aramis Garcia went 52nd overall in the second round to the San Francisco Giants in 2014. The two-time All-Conference USA selection is the 12th Panther all-time to be picked by the Mariners organization.
The lefty third baseman led the FIU offensive attack in 2019, with a stat line of .330, seven home runs and 47 RBIs. The junior led the Blue & Gold in batting average (.330), hits (65), RBIs (47), doubles (11), triples (2), total bases (101) and walks (28).
A stalwart in the heart of the Blue & Gold lineup, Shenton finished the season reaching base in each of the final 29 games despite having his 22-game hit streak snapped on May 14 against Stetson. The 22-game streak is currently tied for the fifth longest such streak in the nation this season.
