MIAMI (March 26, 2021) – In a game that saw a combined 27 runs, the FIU Panthers pounced on the Old Dominion Monarchs 15-12 to take their opening Conference USA game of the year.
FIU's 15 runs on Friday afternoon are the most scored by a Panther squad ever in a C-USA opener.
Tyler Myrick picked up his fourth win of the year, after pitching five innings and striking out five batters to push his team-leading total to 40 on the season.
Justin Farmer had a monster game at the plate to pace the Panther offense, as he went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI. The five-RBI game for Farmer is the most by a Panther since Eddie Silva drove in six runs against Marshall in 2018.
Juan Teixeira,
Adrian Figueroa and
Derek Cartaya all collected three hits each to round out the box score. Teixeira scored four times, while Cartaya drove in two runs and Figueroa pushed across another.
With the Panthers trailing 6-4 in the fifth,
Seth Cannady tied the game with a two-out, two-run single to center. In the very next at-bat,
Luis Chavez lined a double to left-center that scored two more and gave FIU the 8-6 lead.
Farmer's RBI single in the sixth made it 9-6, before FIU exploded for six runs on seven hits in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 15-7.
The Monarchs mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the eighth, as ODU scored five runs before
Angel Tiburcio slammed the door shut in the ninth to preserve the 15-12 victory for the visiting squad from Miami.
