MIAMI (April 9, 2021) – Despite the best efforts from
Justin Farmer and
Francis Villaman, the FIU baseball team fell 11-8 to the visiting Charlotte 49ers on Friday night.
Villaman drove in four Panther runs on the night to double his career-total in an FIU uniform, while Farmer reached base safely five times after earning two base knocks and three walks.
Charlotte jumped out to a 5-0 lead before
Luis Chavez hit his second home run in as many games during the home half of the second to get FIU on the board.
Villaman made it 9-3 in after four innings with a two-run double in the fourth before repeating the feat in the sixth with a two-run single that cut the Charlotte lead to 11-5.
FIU made it interesting in the later innings, scoring three in the eighth and bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Charlotte claimed an 11-8 final score in the weekend opener.
Despite not tallying a hit,
Adrian Figueroa drew a walk in the fifth to extend his reached-safely streak to 14 games.
