Panther Bats Thunder Past Marshall in 8-2 Victory

FIU takes game one in Huntington

MIAMI (April 16, 2021) –  The FIU baseball team silenced the Marshall Thundering Herd on Friday by a score of 8-2 behind a strong display of power at the plate.

Tyler Myrick tossed five innings of two-run ball with three strikeouts on Friday afternoon to nab his sixth win of the season. Jan Figueroa also returned to form in the series opener, pitching four innings of one-hit ball to seal the victory for FIU.

Derek Cartaya paced the Panthers offensively, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a run batted in. The duo of Seth Cannady and Ben Rozenblum also had two hits, while Adrian Figueroa drove in three runs.

Marshall got on the board first with back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead after the second inning. Cartaya took matters into his own hands with his first-career triple as Justin Farmer drove in the Panther second baseman two batters later to tie it at 1-all after three innings.

The Panthers and Thundering Herd traded home runs in the fourth, as Cannady belted his first homer since February of 2019. Ben Rozenblum broke the affair wide open in the sixth inning, with a three-run shot to right center for his first home run of the season.

FIU flexed its muscles on Friday with five of the 11 Panther hits going for extra bases.
