FIU Upends No. 14 LA Tech to Highlight Saturday's Doubleheader

Panthers and Bulldogs split pair of games on Saturday

MIAMI (May 8, 2021) - The FIU baseball team took the opening game of its series with 14th-ranked Louisiana Tech, as the Panthers and Bulldogs split Saturday's doubleheader.

FIU and LA Tech resumed play in the fourth inning on Saturday, after Friday night's game was postponed due to heavy rain. Despite trailing 4-1, the Panthers scored eight unanswered on Saturday afternoon and rallied for a 10-5 victory over the ranked Bulldogs. The ranked win for FIU was its highest since upsetting No. 12 Southern Miss in 2018.

Seth Cannady led the Panthers at the plate in game one, earning three hits, a pair of doubles and three RBI. Steven Ondina earned three RBI himself, while adding a double of his own in game one.

Will Saxton moved to 2-0 overall on the season after pitching five innings in relief, allowing just one run and striking out four batters.

FIU dropped Saturday's second game against LA Tech, falling 12-7 to the Bulldogs. Humberto Torres hit his first career homer in the sixth inning, as he belted a three-run shot to left field and cut the deficit to 6-5 before the Bulldogs scored the next six runs to put the game out of reach.
