Q&A: Fiorella Murillo

Get to know the Colombia native.

MIAMI (July, 7 2021) -  We're continuing our summer Q&A series with FIU volleyball's Fiorella Murillo. The Cali, Colombia, native was named to the All-Conference USA Preseason Team ahead of the 2021 spring season.
 
Q: Why did you want to play volleyball at FIU?
A: ''It was in Miami, a great location and I was near to my old coach which helped me a lot.''

Q: How was the transition to coming to the United States?
A: ''At the beginning, it was very hard because here the culture is way different to Colombia. But after a while, you start getting use to it.''

Q: How does volleyball make you a better student or worker?
A: ''I have learn from volleyball to manage my time and to be more responsible. I've also learned how to be a leader and be there when somebody needs me.''

Q: Who inspired you as a young athlete? Who are your role models now?
A: ''When I was 16, I had so many people that didn't believe in me because I was too small or too skinny. The player I always looked at was Emilce Sosa, a middle from the Argentine National Team. It didn't matter that she was one of the smallest players on the team, she was still one of the best.''

Q: What word describes you?
A: ''Crazy.''

Q: How do you manage to keep calm under pressure during a game?
A: ''I have conversations with myself all the time, it helps me to be calm.''

Q: What is the best part of competing?
A: ''Winning is great. But for me, it's knowing you gave your best and played with your heart.''

Q: At what age did you start your sports career?
A: "I was 14 years old.''

Q: What qualities make a teammate a good leader?
A: "Someone who's always willing to listen and help you no matter what."
