MIAMI (February 19, 2021) – The FIU baseball team improved to 2-0 on the 2022 season with a thrilling 3-1 victory over St. Thomas (Minn.) in game one of what was scheduled to be a doubleheader on Saturday.
The nightcap was postponed after four innings due to monsoonal moisture in the greater Miami area. Game two will resume at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday with the Panthers and Tommies deadlocked at one-run apiece. Sunday's regularly scheduled game will be played 45 mins following the conclusion of game two.
Fans with tickets to today's doubleheader can redeem them for tomorrow's 11 am game continuation. The stadium will be cleared prior to the afternoon's regularly scheduled series finale, which will require its own dedicated ticket.
In game one, FIU starting pitcher
Jan Figueroa worked around a bases loaded no-out situation in the second inning to only allow one run to St. Thomas (Minn.) in what proved to be a pivotal situation as the Tommies only led 1-0 after two frames.
The Panthers stormed back in third inning as an
Alec Sanchez single scored
Robert Sotolongo to tie the game at 1-1.
FIU took control four batters later when Matt Gonzalez doubled home Sanchez and
Adrian Figueroa to put the Panthers up for good with a 3-1 lead.
Jack Clemente earned his first win in a FIU uniform by tossing three scoreless innings in relief of Figueroa.
Carlos Lequerica collected his first save as a Panther by pitching a spotless top of the seventh.
