FIU Completes Opening Weekend Sweep Of St. Thomas (Minn.)

Panthers top Tommies to complete sweep

MIAMI (February 20, 2021) – The FIU Baseball team finished off a four-game opening weekend sweep of the St. Thomas (Minn.) Tommies in a thrilling fashion with a 3-1 win before a 9-3 victory in the weekend finale.

The Panther's four-game sweep is the first of its kind for FIU since sweeping Rutgers in four games to start the 2014 season.

Due to rain on Saturday night, Sunday's action picked up in the top of the fifth in a 1-1 game.

Dante Girardi broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when the sophomore singled through the right side of the STU infield to score fellow middle infielder Steven Ondina to give FIU a 2-1 advantage.

Matt Gonzalez added an insurance run two batters later with a base knock to right that scored Adrian Figueroa and extend the Panther lead to 3-1.

Orlando Hernandez Picked up his first win of the season by pitching three shutout innings of one-hit ball to guarantee a Panthers' series victory.

In the weekend finale, the FIU bats came alive early and often as the Blue and Gold plated seven runs in the first four innings to cruise to a 9-3 victory.

Centerfielder Alec Sanchez paced the Panther offense by going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

The FIU trio of Figueroa, Jayden Melendez and Robert Sotolongo also collected a pair of hits each on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Cabarcas tossed six strong innings of one-run ball with seven punchouts to collect the win in his Panther debut.
