Panthers Top Bethune-Cookman To Remain Undefeated

FIU speed past Wildcats in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (February 22, 2021) – The FIU Baseball team kept its unbeaten record intact in the first midweek of the season on Tuesday night as the Panthers downed the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 9-4.
 
With the win, FIU improves to 5-0 on the season ahead of welcoming Seton Hall and Michigan to Miami this weekend. It was also the Panthers' third come-from-behind victory in 2022.
 
Alec Sanchez turbocharged the Blue & Gold offense with his second four-hit game of the season. The junior from Jacksonville also scored three times on Tuesday.
 
Robert Sotolongo added a career-high three hits and three RBIs including his first-career home run in the fourth. Dante Girardi and Noel Perez each collected a pair of hits.
 
First baseman Adrian Figueroa also drove in a pair.
 
Juhlien Gonzalez picked up his first win of the season by tossing two innings of scoreless ball in relief.
 
FIU took an early 1-0 lead when Sanchez scored on a RBI groundout off the bat of Figueroa. Bethune answered with a four-run second inning to take a 4-1 advantage into the third frame.
 
The Panther bats woke up in the top of the fourth, scoring eight unanswered runs over the next three innings that incorporated an inside-the-park off the bat of Steven Ondina for the 9-4 victory.
 
FIU's bullpen slammed the door shut on the Wildcats by pitching six innings of shutout ball to preserve the Panthers' seven-game win streak over Bethune-Cookman.

The Blue & Gold return to the friendly confines of FIU Baseball Stadium on Feb. 25 as FIU will play host to Seton Hall and Michigan in a round-robin series. Tickets can be found here.
