MIAMI (February 26, 2021) – For the first time in the 2022 season, the FIU baseball team fell 16-8 to the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday night.
The loss drops the Panthers to 6-1 on the young season.
Alec Sanchez continued his hot start to the campaign with a pair of hits that drove in three. The Panther centerfielder also scored once on the night.
Robert Sotolongo and
Dante Girardi each drove in a run while collecting two hits.
Noel Perez pushed across two runs for this second multi-RBI game in a Panther uniform.
Michigan scored five runs in the top half of the first, before Sanchez scored on a Girardi single to make it 5-1 heading to the second.
FIU plated a pair in the bottom of the second to cut the Wolverine lead to 5-3 before Michigan scored four runs in the third for a 9-3 advantage.
The Panthers bat cut the deficit back to 10-7 with a three-run fourth inning only for Michigan to answer in the top of the fifth with four runs to push the lead to 14-7.
Michigan would add two more runs over the final three innings to take the 16-8 decision.

Kevin Martin was handed the loss.
UP NEXT
The weekend will wrap up on Sunday with the Panthers playing a doubleheader. FIU will face Seton Hall at 1 p.m. before a 6 p.m. rematch with Michigan.
