MIAMI (February 27, 2022) – The FIU baseball team split its doubleheader on Sunday by taking the opener against Seton Hall 9-1 before falling 13-9 to Michigan in the nightcap.
In game one, the Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 advantage over the opening five innings thanks in large part to the bat of
Adrian Figueroa and the pitching of
Ryan Cabarcas.
Figueroa paced the FIU attack in game one with a trio of hits and three runs batted in. The sophomore also scored once.
Steven Ondina added three more hits of his own while the duo of
Robert Sotolongo and
Rey Hernandez each collected a pair of base knocks. A total of five different Panthers drove in at least one run against Seton Hall.
Cabarcas was masterful on the mound tossing six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts. The crafty left retired 14-straight Pirate batters during the heart of his outing to pick his second win of the season.
Richie Pena pitched three shutout innings in relief on Sunday to nab the first save of his career.
In a very damp nightcap, Michigan jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first three innings before a Miami rain shower paused action for nearly two hours.
After the rains, The FIU offense came alive scoring nine runs on just five hits and cutting the deficit to 10-9 after the eighth. The Wolverines scored the three in the ninth to prevail 13-9.
The duo of Figueroa and
Bryan Loriga each drove in a pair while two of the five Panther hits came off the bat of
Jayden Melendez.
