MIAMI (March 12, 2022) – On a chilly blustery night for baseball in South Florida, the FIU baseball team dropped its contest Jacksonville 13-6.
Panther centerfielder
Alec Sanchez homered for the second time in as many games on Saturday as the Jacksonville, Florida native pulverized a three-run shot in the third for his team-leading fourth dinger of the season.
A total of seven different Panthers collected a base hit on Saturday, while
Dante Girardi's double down the left field line in the fourth was the only other FIU extra base hit of the night.
Jacksonville opened the scoring with a trio of runs in the first and another in the second to take a 4-0 lead after two innings.
The Panthers evened the score in the bottom of the third when
Robert Sotolongo and
Steven Ondina scored on the Sanchez big fly to right. Girardi tied the game at four-all when he scored on a Dolphin error that prolonged the frame.
Jacksonville scored the next five runs before
Rey Hernandez scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and an Ondina groundout plated
Noel Perez to make it a 9-6 game.
The Dolphins scored once in the eighth and three times in the ninth, before capping the final score at 13-6 after nine innings.
Panther reliever
Richie Pena fell to 0-1 on the season as the righty was tagged with the loss.
