MIAMI (March 13, 2022) –  In the longest game in program history, FIU baseball fell in 20 innings to Jacksonville by a score of 9-4.

The FIU batters scattered 12 hits across the 20 innings with the Panther trio of Dante GirardiMatthew Gonzalez and Dalton Hurst each collecting a pair of hits.

In addition to Girardi's two hits, the sophomore also walked three times on Sunday afternoon to reach base a total of five times. Alec Sanchez also drew three walks on the day.

FIU struck first in the third when Robert Sotolongo scored on a wild pitch before Steven Ondina crossed home on a double steal attempt to give the Panthers an early 2-0 advantage.

The Blue and Gold added two more in the fourth highlighted by a Jayden Melendez RBI double to right field that scored Girardi.

Jacksonville tied it at four in the fifth by scoring four runs off the Panther starter Ryan Cabarcas.

Cabarcas along with seven other Panther pitchers struck out a total of 20 Dolphins in the game to tie the program record for most strikeouts in a single game.

Both teams' bullpens settled in after the fifth for a pitching duel of mythic proportions before Jacksonville broke the game open with a five-run 20th inning to take the weekend finale.
