FIU Softball Powers Its Way to Ninth Straight Win With 10-2 Victory over Bethune-Cookman

Madison Lewis and Kayla Whitehead homer in victory

DELAND, Fla. – Junior Madison Lewis and senior Kayla Whitehead each drilled homers and the FIU softball team posted seven runs in the third inning as it cruised to its ninth consecutive win by a 10-2 margin over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at the Stetson Invitational.

Lewis opened the game's scoring with a solo shot to right center to put the Panthers up 1-0.  The Wildcats managed to tie the score in the top of the third on an RBI double by Desirae Martinez – but it was all FIU from there.

The Panthers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third with Whitehead providing a three-run blast to right to key the offensive surge.  Senior Venessa Gallegos drove in another pair with an RBI single and Brianna Hill scored from third after teammate Gaby Ruiz was caught stealing second to give FIU a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Makayla Garcia added a two RBI double in the fifth that plated Lewis and Alexis Ross to round out the scoring for the Panthers.

Whitehead finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI.  Garcia recorded a pair of hits and two RBI and a run scored.

FIU starter Alexys Lawson (4-5) got the complete-game win after scattering seven hits and allowing two runs while striking out three over the shortened five-inning contest.  She did not issue a walk.

Halyne Gonzalez (2-5) took the loss for the Wildcats after allowing three runs and three hits over two innings of work.

The win marks the ninth straight for the Panthers and moves their record to 13-9 overall.  Bethune-Cookman falls to 4-14 with the loss.
