FIU Falls In Extras To No. 11 Southern Miss

Panthers return to the road next weekend

MIAMI (April 16, 2022) – To close out a three-game holiday weekend series, the FIU baseball team fell 6-4 in 12 innings to No. 11 Southern Miss.

Saturday's matinee started off with a bang when newly minted leadoff man Adrian Figueroa took a 3-1 pitch to the opposite field for the sophomore's first homer of the season.

Figueroa's homer is his first since March 12, 2021, against Coastal Carolina and it was also the Panthers' first leadoff home run of the 2022 season. Figueroa added a base hit in the 12th inning for his fourth multi-hit game of the season.

Alec Sanchez collected a pair of base hits of his own, while the Panther trio of Robert SotolongoJorge Ramirez and Noel Perez each had one.

Panther starter Patrick Pridgen pitched 6.1 innings with six strikeouts but was given a no-decision. Despite tossing three innings of one-run ball, Angel Tiburcio was dealt the loss.

FIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening frame when Steven Ondina stole home on a double steal attempt following the Figueroa homer.

Southern Miss tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Panthers answered right back in the home half to take a 4-2 lead when Mario Zabala scored from second on a failed picked-off attempted by the Golden Eagle pitcher. After working a walk, Steven Ondina scored two batters later from first on a Sotolongo single to make it 4-2.

A pitching duel developed after the third inning with Southern Miss only scoring a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh to tie it at 4-all.

The Blue & Gold threatened in the ninth when FIU loaded the bases with one out. The inning ended on a borderline pitch that resulted in Dalton Hurst being picked off at third to force extras.

The pitching showcase continued into extras until Southern Miss took the lead for good with a two-run home run to right in the top of the 12th to make the 6-4 final.

FIU hits the road next, as the Panthers head to the Lonestar State for a three-game weekend showdown with the UTSA Roadrunners starting on April 22.
