SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2022) – On a blustery night for baseball deep in the heart of Texas, the FIU baseball team fell 12-4 to the Roadrunners of UTSA.
The Panther trio of
Adrian Figueroa,
Noel Perez and
Alec Sanchez accounted for six of the nine Panther hits in the series opener.
Perez had the best game of his young Panther career as the FIU infielder homered for the first time and scored twice.
Figueroa had three hits on the night highlighted by the first triple of his career. Sanchez added two more triples of his own to push his team lead to five.
FIU had three triples in total on Friday night for the first time since 1986, which tied the program record for most triples in a game.
Panther starter
Kevin Martin was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on no hits over 1.1 innings of work.
Orlando Hernandez and
Mario Fernandez each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
UTSA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first by scratching across a run without a base hit. FIU answered immediately in the top of the second when
Mario Zabala scored on an error committed by a UTSA outfielder to tie the game at one.
The Roadrunners then sprinted out to an 8-1 lead with four innings in the books. In the fifth, Perez reached on a throwing error and later came around to score when Figueroa and Sanchez slapped back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to 8-3.
UTSA added one in the fifth and three more in the sixth before Perez lifted the ball over the wall in left field in the ninth to make the final 12-4.
