MIAMI (April 2, 2022) – The FIU baseball team fell 14-7 on Saturday night to the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Headlined by
Steven Ondina, five different Panthers collected a pair hits off of Monarch pitching on Saturday. Ondina paced the FIU offense with two base knocks and two RBIs.
The Panther quartet of
Robert Sotolongo,
Alec Sanchez,
Jorge Ramirez, and
Noel Perez each recorded two hits and drove in a run. Sanchez also scored twice on the evening.
ODU opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first off Panther starter
Carlos Lequerica before the Blue and Gold answered in the home half to take a brief 3-2 lead at the end of the first.
Following a Sanchez single to right that scored Sotolongo, Ramirez tallied his first double of the year to tie the game at two-all.
Dante Girardi scored one pitch later on a wild pitch from the ODU starter to give FIU the lead.
The Monarchs scored 10 of the next 12 runs to build a 12-5 advantage heading into the eighth inning.
FIU's bats attempted a rally in the bottom of the eighth by scoring a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 12-7 before ODU countered with two more runs in the top of the ninth to prevail 14-7.
Lequerica was saddled with the defeat after surrendering six earned runs over three innings of work.
