Panthers Drop Saturday Night Matchup With Middle Tennessee

Carpio hits and scores on Saturday night

MIAMI (May 7, 2022) – The FIU baseball team fell 5-1 to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on a sweltering Saturday night in South Florida. 

Matthew Gonzalez and Ruben Carpio owned four of the seven Panther hits on the evening with the FIU offensive duo collecting multi-hit nights. The lone Blue & Gold extra-base knock was a Carpio double down the left field line to lead off the sixth. 

Jorge Ramirez, Robert Sotolongo and Noel Perez each reached via a base hit on Saturday. 

Panther starter Carlos Lequerica was dealt the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits over three innings of work. Lequerica also fanned five Middle Tennessee batters. 

In relief, Orlando Hernandez struck out five Blue Raiders over two scoreless frames. In addition to Hernandez, Richie Pena also had two shutout innings out of the bullpen. 

Middle Tennessee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when the Blue Raider leadoff man stroked a solo home run to left center on the first pitch of the game. 

The Blue Raiders added three more in the top of the second to make it 4-0 with a three-run homer to dead center. 

FIU's only run of the contest came in the sixth inning with Panthers on the corners. The left-handed hitting Alec Sanchez was at the plate when a double steal was called that resulted in Perez swiping second and Carpio hustling home. 

Middle Tennessee answered with a run in the seventh to make the final a 5-1 score.

The series finale between FIU and Middle Tennessee is slated for Noon on Sunday.
