FIU Stumbles In Series Finale With Middle Tennessee

Carpio homers in defeat

MIAMI (May 8, 2022) – On a steamy South Florida afternoon, the FIU baseball team dropped its series finale 11-5 to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.

Ruben Carpio continued his offensive onslaught; as the FIU outfielder pushed his team-best hitting streak to eight games with his third-straight multi-hit game.

Carpio drove in three of the five Panther runs on Sunday with a two-run home run in the seventh and an RBI double in the eighth.

The Panther duo of Alec Sanchez and Robert Sotolongo also collect multi-hit games in the series finale. Sanchez drove in his team-leading 35th RBI with a double in the seventh.

Matthew Gonzalez also drove in a run on Sunday.

In the first start of his promising young Panther career, Owen Puk was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in two innings of work.

The bullpen trio of Mario Fernandez, David Eckaus and Bryan Pazos closed out the game with three innings of shutout work.

After shutdown first inning from both starting pitchers, Middle Tennessee opened the scoring by plating a pair in the second.

FIU cut the lead in half when Sanchez scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matthew Gonzalez to make it 2-1 with four in the books.

Middle Tennessee blew the game open by scoring four in the sixth and five in the seventh pushing the Blue Raider advantage to 11-1.

With the threat of being run-ruled in the air at the sauna that was FIU Baseball Stadium on Sunday, Ruben Carpio extended the game with a two-run blast to right for his first dinger as a Panther.

Jayden Melendez scored a handful of batters later when Sanchez doubled to center to complete the three-run FIU seventh and cut the deficit to 11-4.

The Caprio show continued in the home half of the eighth when the outfielder poked a double to left field that plated Adrian Figueroa for the 11-5 final.
