EL PASO, Texas (May 13, 2023) - The FIU track and field program concluded action at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships Sunday, highlighted by a gold medal from
Michaelle Valentin in the discus and a silver from
Valerie Lastra in the 1500.
Valentin, a junior, threw 56.64m to comfortably win the event. She now will prepare for the upcoming NCAA East Regional, with the goal of advancing to NCAA Outdoor for the second consecutive year.
"Michaelle came here and took care of business," said head coach
Ryan Heberling. "That's a really solid start to the postseason for her and good things are ahead."
Lastra earned silver in the 1500 for FIU with a time of 4:27.81, one of three Panthers who qualified for the finals along with
Lisa Adjouadi and
Ania San Roman Lopez.
Danielle McGonigle narrowly missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.28m. Isabell-Mary Luik took a fourth place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m. In the finals of the women's 800,
Ane Martin Del Campo earned points with a sixth place finish of 2:15.59.
In the men's 5000,
Jeshua Osorio,
Ryan Jones, and
Dennis Moreno earned six points for FIU with a sixth, seventh, and eighth place mark.
Devin Mannings and
Isaiah Tavo placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the discus.
As a team, the FIU women earned a fifth place finish with 96.2 points.
