MIAMI — FIU's softball program fell in its Conference USA (CUSA) series opener, 9-3, to Jacksonville State on Friday night at Baptist Health Stadium.

The Panthers (23-10, 5-5 CUSA) dropped their first CUSA game at home this season, suffering a defeat to the CUSA-leading Gamecocks (24-10, 9-1 CUSA). Paige Miller led the offensive effort with two hits and a run scored. Kendall Catherwood, Isabella Perez and Daley Alsobrook each provided an RBI for FIU.

FIU and Jax State battled for position early as the Panthers trailed by just one run after both the second (2-1) and third inning (3-2). From there, JSU scored five unanswered runs from the fourth to sixth inning to build a six-run advantage, of which was too much for FIU to overcome.

J'dah Girigorie took the loss for the Panthers, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing five earned runs on 94 pitches. Meagan Villazon pitched the final 3.0 innings and surrendered three runs in relief.

FIU had five hits and five walks as a team, but did not record an extra-base hit. On the flip side, Jacksonville State hit two crucial homers early and finished with four extra-base hits and 10 total hits.
