Baseball Hosts Florida Gulf Coast in Midweek Matchup

Panthers take on the Eagles for the first of three matchups this season

MIAMI – The FIU baseball program welcomes the FGCU Eagles to FIU Baseball Stadium on Tuesday night for midweek action.

FIU (7-10) enters the contest looking to bounce back after dropping all three games to Florida Atlantic in last weekend's home-and-home series. The Panthers fell 14-2 on March 6 and 7-3 on March 8 in Boca Raton, while also dropping a 5-3 decision in 11 innings on March 7 in Miami.
 
Tuesday's matchup marks the first of three meetings between the two programs this season. FIU will travel to Fort Myers on April 21 before hosting the Eagles again in Miami on May 6.
 
The midweek contest also serves as FIU's final game before opening Conference USA play. The Panthers will travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to face defending CUSA champion Western Kentucky in a three-game series from March 13–15.
 
Offensively, FIU has recorded 143 hits as a team with 108 RBI, ranking fifth in Conference USA.
 
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Ildefonso has helped lead the offense, pacing the Panthers with 22 hits, tied for the fourth-most in CUSA. He is also tied for the team lead with 17 RBI and is coming off a five-hit weekend, including his first career four-hit performance on March 7. Ildefonso has recorded hits in 15 of his 17 games this season and ranks second on the team with seven doubles.
 
Samuel Fischer leads the team with a .339 batting average, totaling 19 hits, three home runs and 10 RBI. He also leads the Panthers in walks (13) and hit-by-pitches (8) while starting all 17 games this season.
 
Aidan Cohall has added production with a team-best eight doubles, tied for the second-most in Conference USA, along with 12 RBI and 16 hits. He recorded two doubles in a two-hit performance at Florida Atlantic on March 8.
 
Mario Trivella continues to provide power in the lineup, leading the team with six home runs, tied for second in CUSA. Trivella homered on March 7 and added a two-hit performance on March 8 against the Owls.
 
On the mound, FIU ranks fourth in Conference USA with 148 strikeouts, led by George Adams' 20 strikeouts across 16 innings pitched. The left-hander delivered a strong outing against Florida Atlantic on March 7, recording career highs in innings pitched (5) and strikeouts (8).
 
Julian Mlodzinski also turned in a solid performance in Sunday's start, tossing a career-high four innings while allowing just one run.
 
Out of the bullpen, Enrique Sierra has made seven appearances and has not allowed a run over his last 3.1 innings. Tyrus Riley recorded two strikeouts in two scoreless innings against Florida Atlantic, lowering his ERA to 1.80, while Bryce Turner struck out four over two innings in the same series.
 
HISTORY WITH FGCU
Tuesday's game will mark the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs since the series began in 2009, with FGCU holding a 19-9 advantage.
 
The Eagles won all three matchups between the teams during last season's midweek series.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
FGCU enters Tuesday's contest with a 12-4 overall record after securing a series victory over Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach.
 
As a team, the Eagles are hitting .348 and rank second nationally in hits (207) and fifth in doubles (46).
 
Javier Gorostola leads the offense with a .449 batting average, totaling 22 RBI, four home runs and seven doubles. Jon Embury has blasted a team-high eight home runs with 30 RBI, while Evan Dempsey has recorded 24 hits and 14 RBI.
 
On the mound, Dempsey leads the staff with 34 strikeouts in 23 innings. Chris Diaz has made four starts with a 4.58 ERA. Out of the bullpen, Preston Rodgers holds a 1.74 ERA in 10.1 innings, while Reed Biemiller has recorded one save this season.
