BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2011) - One hundred ten minutes were not enough to decide a winner as the FIU women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against the WKU Hilltoppers on Friday night at WKU Soccer Field. The Panthers now own a 7-5-1 overall record and remain unbeaten in the Sun Belt Conference with a 4-0-1 mark. WKU moves to 7-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the SBC.
"It was a hard-fought game. We both battled hard and they're a well-coached team," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "It's always tough to play here; they're 6-1 [at home] for a reason. At the end of the day, I felt we played hard and just needed to execute better. I'm not disappointed with the effort we gave tonight."
Not only was the score identical at 0-0, but each team managed 14 total shots with six on goal. The keepers on each side registered six saves as FIU redshirt sophomore Kaitlyn Savage turned in her third-straight shutout performance.
The first half was a battle as neither side was able to get any solid opportunities to score. The Panthers did pick up a few chances in the second half but the WKU keeper kept FIU off the board. WKU nearly put the game winner through at the end of the second half with time winding down but Savage was able to come up with the big stop.
"Opportunities were at a premium tonight," Chestnutt added.
The Panthers will head to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a Sunday afternoon match against Middle Tennessee, the reigning conference champions. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. (EST). Live stats will be provided at www.FIUSports.com.
