LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 10, 2012) --- The FIU women's tennis team (1-6) fell to the New Mexico State Aggies (3-3), during the first day of the Lady Raider Shootout on Friday, Feb. 10, in Lubbock, Texas.
New Mexico jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles portion of the competition. Freshman Karyn Guttormsen and sophomore Giulietta Boha lost to Manon Sylvain and Denise Van Der Ben, 8-4, and senior Lisa Johnson and junior Magali Holt dropped their match with Ginet Pinero and Ros-Polly Nguyen, 8-3.
During singles play, Natalia Salum gave New Mexico State a 2-0 advantage after defeating Boha, 6-4, 6-1. FIU got on the board when junior Rita Maisak downed Van Der Ben, 6-4, 6-2. However, the Aggies took the next two singles matches to win the contest, 4-1. Pinero defeated Johnson, 6-3, 6-3, and freshman Nina Djordjevic lost to Annemieke Witte, 6-2, 6-4.
The loss marks the fourth-straight for the Panthers, who drop to 1-6 on the season.
FIU will next face Rice on Day Two of the Lady Raider Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 11. The match is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
