TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2012) --- Despite victories by freshman Sarah McLean and sophomore Giulietta Boha, the FIU women's tennis team (1-4) fell to the No. 21-ranked Florida State Seminoles (4-1), 5-2, on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Panthers fell behind 0-1 after being swept in the doubles portion of the match. The duo of Boha and freshman Karyn Guttormsen fell to Francesca Segarelli and Ruth Seaborne, 8-1. Senior Lisa Johnson and freshman Nina Djordjevic were downed by Leyla Erkan and Noemie Scharle, 8-2, while McLean and junior Rita Maisak fell to Carolina De Los Santos and Amy Sargeant, 8-7 (2).
FIU tied the match at 1-1 after Boha picked up the first singles victory as Scharle retired from the match for unspecified reasons. FSU went on to win four-straight singles match to clinch the victory (5-1) as Guttormsen fell to De Los Santos, 6-0, 6-0; Djordjevic lost to Sargeant, 6-2, 6-0; Maisak lost to Seaborne, 6-3, 6-2, and Johnson fell to Erkan, 6-2, 6-2. FIU made the score 5-2, following McLean's victory over Segarelli, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-6.
FIU will next travel to Athens, Ga., to face No. 6 Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 5. The match is set for 11:00 a.m. ET.
