Marita Davydova, the FIU women's basketball team defeated Sun Belt Conference foe Troy, 82-76, on Saturday evening at U.S. Century Bank Arena. With the win, the Panthers improve to 11-7 (5-4 SBC) while the Trojans fall to 3-14 (0-8 SBC) on the season.
FIU led by as many as nine points in the first half, running out to an 11-2 lead at the 15:54 mark. Troy got back into the game quickly, taking a three-point lead at 26-23 with 4:21 remaining in the stanza, but the Panthers bounced back, taking a 33-28 advantage into the halftime break. For the period, FIU out-scored Troy, 10-2, in second-chance points.
The Panthers led for the majority of the second half before the Trojans knotted the score at 58-58 with 5:47 remaining in the contest. FIU regained the lead on a layup from senior
Finda Mansare. With Troy staying close, the Panthers converted 11-of-14 free throws over the final two minutes of play to come away with an 82-76 victory.
Coley led all scorers with 33 points on 7-of-21 shooting from the floor and 19-of-23 shooting from the free throw line, as the 19 free throws made and 23 free throws attempted each establish new single-game school records. Coley has now scored in double-figures in 17 of 18 games this season and in 74 of 84 career contest, as she eclipsed the 1,700 career-point plateau during tonight's contest and has 1,724 points for her career.
Davydova notched her second-straight and seventh-career double-double versus the Trojans, posting a career-high-tying 18 points and a game-high 11 boards. Senior
Carmen Miloglav led the Panthers in the assist category, dishing out a career-high-tying seven dimes, while Coley and Miloglav each recorded a pair of steals on the night.
As a team, FIU shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field, against 44.3 percent (27-of-61) shooting for Troy. The 82 points scored mark a season-best for the Panthers, as do the 32 free throws made and 42 free throws attempted. FIU out-rebounded Troy, 44-37, and the Panthers held a 23-10 advantage in second-chance points.
FIU will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, when the Panthers travel to Lafayette, La., to take on the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET.
