@FIUSwimDive Knocks Off Florida Atlantic, 175-102

MIAMI (Oct. 5, 2013) – The FIU women's swimming and diving team earned a 175-102 victory to open the 2013-14 season on Saturday afternoon at the FIU Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. The win for the Panthers over the Owls is the largest over FAU in the rivalry.

"I'm very pleased with the meet today," said head coach Randy Horner. "For our first meet of the season we competed very well. We had a good mix of freshmen and upperclassmen step up.  Both of our winning relays today had three freshmen on them, that's nice!  We have many things we can do better, next we will be tested on our first road trip when we swim at UNF. "

In Saturday's meet, senior Sabrina Beaupre and freshman Lily Kaufmann each qualified for NCAA Zone diving. In one-meter diving, Beaupre was the top scorer in the meet with a mark of 295.2 while Kaufmann earned a score of 265.2. In the three-meter dives, Beaupre also led the way with 294.45 while Kaufmann checked in at 258.67.

In the swimming events, senior Sonia Perez led the way for FIU, winning  three individual events on the day. Perez started things off by earning nine points for the Panthers, scoring a time of 10:29.78 in the 1000 Freestyle. Perez also took home an event title in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:00.89. Her third victory came in the 200 IM, clocking a mark of 2:04.91.

Also having a strong day for the Panthers was junior Klara Andersson, who earned two individual event titles in addition to two relay victories. Individually, Andersson earned a victory in the 50 freestyle, putting up a time of 24.25 to earn nine points for the Panthers. She additionally won the 100 Freestyle with a mark of 53.21.

In the relays, Anderson joined Jennifer Alfani, Therese Nord and Jennifer Deist in the 200 yard medley relay, where the group posted a time of 1:47.45 to earn the points for FIU. Additionally, the same group earned a time of 3:32.95 in the 400 Freestyle to earn the victory. In that event, Alfani's lead off time was the fastest 100 Freestyle time of the day at 52.69 seconds. Alfani additionally won the 100 back, posting a time of 57.84 seconds.

Freshman Hannah Vandersluis won 2 events on the day as well, the 100 Breastroke (1:07.52) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:24.42). Johanna Gustafsdottir also won a title in the 200 Freestyle, posting a mark of 1:54.59 seconds.

FIU next hosts its Alumni Meet next Saturday, followed by a matchup at North Florida on Oct. 19.
