MIAMI (Nov. 14, 2013) - Four players reached double figures in scoring as the FIU men's basketball team (3-2) defeated Florida College, 85-39. The win was the first for Head Coach Anthony Evans on Lime Court at U.S. Century Bank Arena and improves the Panthers record to 26-7 in home-openers all-time.
Redshirt senior Rakeem Buckles' 16 points extended his streak to five-straight double-digit scoring games with FIU. Senior Tymell Murphy went 5-of-10 for 10 points and 13 rebounds for his 11th career double-double. Sophomore Jerome Frink posted 12 points, while junior Marco Porcher Jimenez tallied 12, a season-high.
The Panthers went on a 10-0 run to begin the team's inaugural game on the newly renovated Lime Court at U.S. Century Bank. Florida College cut the deficit to 18-14, before Dennis Mavin drained a shot from three point land, which extended FIU's streak to 150-straight games with a successful three-point shot made. The Panthers led by as many as 14, 34-20, in the first half, when Porcher Jimenez hit one from beyond the arc.
FIU entered halftime with a 10-point, 34-24, lead, and shot 16-of-36 for the half. They out-rebounded the Falcons, 29-19, on the boards in the first 20 minutes.
Redshirt senior Raymond Taylor scored the Panthers first points of the second half with his seventh 3-pointer of the season. FIU went on a 22-12 run to start the second, which gave the Panthers a 20-point, 56-36, lead, followed by a Falcons time-out with at the 11:25 mark. Out of the timeout, Porcher Jimenenz stole a Falcons east-to-west pass and dished it off to freshman Jason Boswell. Boswell found Porcher Jimenez in the corner for three.
FIU shot 55.7 percent for the game, going 39-for-70, and tallied 51 points in the second half alone. Defensively, the team only relinquished 15 points in the final 20 minutes, which is team-best through five games and never trailed once in 40 minutes of action.
Sixty-eight percent of FIU's points came from in the paint, while the bench posted 30 points, the highest total since Dec. 22, 2012 versus Texas Southern (32 points). Off the fast break, FIU notched 20 for the night. The team's largest lead came with 38 seconds to go, as the Panthers were ahead by 48 points.
FIU returns to action on Saturday, hosting Texas Southern at 7 p.m. from Lime Court at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
