MIAMI (March 15, 2013) – The FIU women's tennis team (2-10) fell to the No. 20-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (9-1), 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.
Freshman Carlotta Orlando picked up her second-straight singles victory, defeating Lynda Xepoleas, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. The win improved the Trieste, Italy, native's record this spring to a team-best, 8-3.
Orlando's victory proved to be the only point for the Panthers.
FIU dropped two-straight doubles matches as Purdue won the doubles point. The duo of junior Giulietta Boha and freshman Lotte Gras fell to Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot, while senior Magali Holt and freshman Michelle Sabado dropped an 8-2 decision to Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder at No. 3.
In singles play, freshman Aleksandra Trifunovic lost to Mara Schmidt, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles position. At No. 3, Boha fell to Vidal, 6-3, 7-5, while at the No. 4 spot Holt lost to Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, 6-3, 6-2.
Rounding out the singles portion of the match, Sabado lost to Krisztina Kapitany, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5, and Gras fell to Pere, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.
FIU will next host Winthrop on Sunday, March 17, at the FIU Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.
