Hilltoppers Slip By Panthers, 9-8

Box Score Trevor Lowe hit a two-run home run to lift WKU past FIU, 9-8 Saturday afternoon at the FIU Baseball Stadium in the second game of a three-game series.

Down 8-7 with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, the Hilltoppers rallied. With Blake Crabtree aboard on a fielder's choice, Lowe came up and delivered a two-run home run to left to give WKU the lead.

After FIU (11-12, 1-4 Sun Belt) knocked out WKU starter Andrew Edwards, left-hander Austin Clay (3-1) allowed just one earned run in 5 1/3 innings to the Panthers.

The Hilltoppers (13-10, 5-0 SBC) took early leads of 2-0 and 6-3 only to see the Panthers come back to tie and eventually take the lead.

FIU got a three-run home run from Edwin Rios in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead. Down 6-3 in the second inning, Panthers catcher Aramis Garcia belted a three-run home run just inside the left field foul pole to tie the score. Garcia tied Josh Anderson for the team lead in home runs with four.

The Panthers took an 8-6 lead in the third inning on RBI singles from T.J. Shantz and Zach Sweety.

Sweety, Garcia, Rios, Oscar Aguirre and Shantz each had two hits for the Panthers.

The Panthers and Hilltoppers conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. from the FIU Baseball Stadium.
