Murphy Scores a Career-High 29 Points as @FIUMensBBall Falls to Marshall, 80-68

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Jan. 30, 2014) – Senior Tymell Murphy scored a career-high 29 points as the FIU men's basketball team (11-10, 3-3 C-USA) fell to the Marshall Thundering Herd (8-14, 2-5 C-USA), 80-68, on Thursday evening from the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va.
 
Murphy, who converted 12-of-19 from the floor, notched his eighth 20-point outing of the season and the 16th of his career. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native became the 13th player in FIU history with 800-or-more career points with his performance this evening. Murphy's 29 points gives the 6-foot-5 forward 825 for his FIU career. Murphy also recorded eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
 
Also scoring in double-figures were redshirt junior Dennis Mavin (12 points) and redshirt sophomore Cody Mann (10 points). Mavin notched three assists and two steals, while Mann grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists.
 
The Panthers finished the night shooting 45.2 percent from the floor (28-of-62) and converted 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from 3-point range. The Thundering Herd shot 50.9 percent from the floor (29-of-57), including 6-of-17 from beyond the arc (35.3 percent).
 
The Panthers held a 36-32 edge on the boards, out-scoring Marshall 18-10 in second-chance points.
 
After 20 minutes of action, both teams entered halftime knotted up at 34-all. Leading by as many as six (15-9 with 14:11 left in the half), the Panthers fell behind midway through the first half following a 7-0 run by the Thundering Herd to put FIU down 25-19. FIU chipped away at the Marshall lead to tie the game at the half. Murphy led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds through the first 20 minutes. Mann registered a game-high five rebounds for the half and dished out two assists.
 
In the first half, FIU shot 50.0 percent (15-of-30) from the floor, while holding Marshall to 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the field. The Panthers out-rebounded the Thundering Herd, 19-12, through the first half of action.
 
The second half saw the momentum swing back-and-forth before a trey by Marshall's Kareem Canty gave the Thundering Herd a 54-53 lead with 11:02 left in the game. Marshall extended its lead to 58-53 after back-to-back scores and held onto the advantage for the remainder of the game.
 
Four Marshall players reached double-figures led by Chris Thomas, who posted 19 points.
 
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Panthers and dropped FIU to 0-2 all-time versus the Thundering Herd.  
 
The Panthers travel to Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 1, to take on the Charlotte 49ers. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
