Box Score RUSTON, La. (April 12, 2014) – The FIU baseball team (26-9, 10-7) recorded its Conference USA single season record 11th shutout in a 3-0 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Panthers not only clinched the series, but matched their win total from last season as well.
Senior
Mike Gomez tallied his 22nd-career save, tying Jerry Santos for the second-most in school history. Freshman
Cody Crouse tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four batters to earn his second-straight quality start and his third overall of 2014. Junior
Julius Gaines led the way for the Panthers with two hits. Junior
Aramis Garcia went 1-for-2 with an RBI and senior
Zach Sweety added an RBI triple in the ninth.
Senior
Tyler Hibbert worked a lead-off walk to open the game. Gaines followed with a single to give the Panthers two runners with no outs. Hibbert and Gaines advanced a base and then scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Garcia. FIU led 1-0 after an inning of play.
Gaines worked a one-out double in the third inning. During Garcia's at-bat, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then with two outs and junior
Josh Anderson at the plate, Gaines advanced on home on another wild pitch to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore
Charles Cormier and junior Mike Ellis combined for 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief to help preserve the lead before Gomez came in. Sweety's RBI triple came with two outs in the ninth, scoring sophomore
Edwin Rios.
FIU closes out its three-game set with the Bulldogs on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. Freshman
Chris Mourelle (6-0, 0.59) will make the start for FIU. Mourelle's last 20 1/3 innings have been scoreless.
