Chris Mourelle Tosses Second Shutout of the Season in 1-0 @FIUBaseball Win

Box Score MIAMI (April 6, 2014) – Freshman right-hander Chris Mourelle was untouchable, tossing his second shutout of 2014 as FIU blanked Old Dominion, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. A sixth inning RBI double by junior Louis Silverio gave the Panthers the only run they would need.

Panther starting pitchers have thrown three shutouts this season with Mourelle being responsible for two of them. Overall, the FIU pitching staff has thrown 10 shutouts (7 combined shutouts) this season. The 2014 FIU pitching staff is now second all-time in program history with the 10 shutouts. The 1995 FIU pitching staff threw 16 shutouts which is the program record.

Mourelle, a Miami native, allowed just five hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter as he improved to 6-0 on the season and dropped his ERA to 0.59. Mourelle, who threw 71 percent of his pitches for strikes on Sunday, also threw a two-hit shutout at Bethune-Cookman on March 5.

The Panthers did get seven hits on the day, with senior Tyler Hibbert collecting two of them. Silverio's RBI came in the sixth on a double to left field. Junior Julius Gaines led off the sixth with an infield hit and then stole second base to give the Panthers a runner in scoring position. Hibbert moved him over on a sacrifice bunt, which was then followed by Silverio's RBI double.

With Mourelle's shutout, FIU's team ERA dropped down to 1.63 for the season, which currently leads the nation.

FIU will begin a four-game road trip in the state of Louisiana on Wednesday, as it travels to Louisiana-Monroe for a mid-week contest. The Panthers will then head on over to Ruston for a three-game set with Louisiana Tech.
