MIAMI (Jan. 30, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (2-0) handed Stetson (1-1) its first loss of the season with a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.
Sophomore
Nina Nagode claimed the match-clinching point with a 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3 win over Carolina Meregalli at the No. 4 spot.
FIU fell behind early, dropping the doubles point as the Hatters took 2-of-3 matches for the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers tied the match, 1-1, following a 6-3, 6-0 win by freshman
Nerma Caluk over Arijana Korac at the No. 3 spot. Junior
Carlotta Orlando (No. 2 position) gave FIU a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Isabella Fernandez. The Hatters responded as senior
Yana Koroleva fell to Alizee Michaud, 7-6 (4), 6-4. The Panthers regained the lead, 3-2, after junior
Kaitlin Brozovich picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Eveline Lepinay from the No. 5 spot. Stetson tied the match at 3-all as sophomore
Valentina Briceno lost to Ashley Dean, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (5), before Nagode's match-clinching victory.
The win improves FIU to 2-0 as the Panthers have started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2010 season.
The Panthers travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on the Penn Quakers on Friday, Feb. 6. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.
