Ft. Myers (Oct. 20, 2015) -- The FIU men's soccer team (9-4) defeated cross-state foe, Florida Gulf Coast (5-3-3), 2-1, in overtime Tuesday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles took the lead, 1-0, in the 33rd minute off a penalty kick.
Junior
Patrick Lopez matched FGCU with a goal scored in the 59th minute. The assist was by junior
Ismael Longo who set up a wide open shot for Lopez. It marked the second-straight game with a goal for Lopez, who notched his first-career goal on Saturday as FIU knocked off No. 9 Old Dominion (2-1).
The Panthers outshot FGCU in regulation, 13-8, but neither team could find the back of the net to go ahead as the game went into overtime, 1-1.
In overtime, sophomore
Darren Rios scored the game-winner in the 95th minute. Junior
Jamar Campion-Hinds sent a cross from the right side to give Rios a goal in the top, left shelf.
Goalie
Arthur Clapot totaled three saves in the game and registered his fifth-straight victory for the Panthers.
The win was the second-straight for the Panthers, who have knocked off two-straight ranked opponents.
FIU will next travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
