Panthers Visit Marshall Thursday on ASN

FIU won the previous matchup in Miami back on Jan. 15

THE GAME: FIU returns to action on Feb. 26 for an 8:00 p.m. ET matchup at Marshall on the American Sports Network. The matchup between FIU and Marshall will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams as the Thundering Herd leads the all-time series, 2-1. The last time these two teams met was Jan. 15, 2015, as FIU earned a 66-62 overtime victory on Lime Court at FIU Arena. Dennis Mavin paced the Panthers' offense with 19 points, including six-straight in the second half to help FIU erase an 18-point deficit. 

NOTES TO KNOW: 
Dennis Mavin became the 14th player in program history to have scored at least 800 career points during their time at FIU vs. Louisiana Tech on Feb. 14. He now ranks 14th at FIU on the career scoring list with 839 points and trails Darius Cook (1997-00) by just 17 points for the No. 13 spot in FIU's record book.
• Mavin has posted 60 double-digit scoring games and has 10, 20-plus point games for his career, including eigth this season. Mavin has led the Panthers in scoring in 21 of 27 games this season.
• Entering Thursday's game, Mavin currently ranks second in Conference USA in scoring (17.5), ninth in defensive rebounds (4.4), 11th in assists (2.9), 11th in steals (1.3) and first in minutes played (35.9). 
Adrian Diaz enter's Thursday's contest against Marshall with 497 career points, three shy of reaching the 500-point plateau. 
• With his school record 77 blocks this season, Diaz needs just eight more blocks to reach 100 for his career. Diaz recorded 15 blocks in his first two seasons at Kansas State.
• Diaz now ranks first in Conference USA in field goal percentage and fourth in the nation, as he is shooting at a 62.7 percent clip.
• Diaz also currently ranks 18th in Conference USA in scoring (13.1), while also ranking seventh in rebounding (6.8) and first in blocked shots (2.9). Diaz has posted five or more blocks in seven different games this season and put up a career-high eight-block performance vs. UTSA on Feb. 5.
• Diaz has been strong on the offensive glass for the Panthers, averaging 3.3 offensive rebounds-per-game this season. The 3.3 clip for Diaz ranks fourth in C-USA and 37th nationally. 
Ray Rodriguez is just 10 points away from hitting the 200-point mark for his career.
Dominique Williams' 117 rebounds this season ranks as the ninth most in school history for a sophomore. Williams is just two rebounds shy of passing Cesar Bochachia (1989-90) on that list.
• Senior MARCO PORCHER JIMENEZ is just six three-pointers away from 100 career field goals from long distance. 
• FIU is 8-5 when coming off a loss. In his two seasons at FIU, head coach ANTHONY EVANS' teams are 16-13 when coming off a loss. 
• Entering Thursday, FIU is amonst C-USA leaders in team defense, ranking second in FG percentage defense (.400) and fourth in scoring defense (64.1). 

LAST TIME OUT: FIU closed out its two-game, home-slate with a 70-56 loss to the North Texas Mean Green on Saturday night on Lime Court at FIU Arena. With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 4-14 all-time against the Mean Green. Leading the way for the Panthers was senior Dennis Mavin, who scored 19 points on the night to go along with five rebounds and two assists in a full 40 minutes of action. Redshirt junior Adrian Diaz scored 13 points for the day while blocking six shots and grabbing five boards. Diaz now has 77 career blocks at FIU as he moves into fourth place all-time at FIU. Sophomore Dominique Williams rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Panthers, as he dropped in 12 points while notching seven rebounds. The Mean Green closed the final 4:47 of the game on a 15-7 run to result in a 70-56 loss for FIU.

SCOUTING MARSHALL: Marshall enters Thursday's contest with a 9-18 overall mark and a 5-9 record in Conference USA action. Priot to losing their last two game, the Thundering Herd were winners of their last three and five of their last six. Averaging 66.8 points-per-game, Marshall is allowing 72.0 points-per contest, a point differential of -5.2. The Thundering Herd has taken 1,570 total shots this season, with close to half of those shots coming from beyond the arc, as they have made 217-693 from three-point range, shooting at a 31.3 percent clip and averaging 8.0 makes from long distance each game. Leading the way for Marshall is Ryan Taylor, who is averaging 14.6 points-per-game and 8.7 rebounds-per-contest. Austin Loop is also double-digit scorers for the Thundering Herd, as he is averaging 11.2 points. Marshall is coached by Dan D'Antoni, a long time NBA assistant coach and brother of former Suns, Knicks and Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. 

NEXT UP: Following its matchup with the Thundering Herd, FIU will return to action on Feb. 28 for an 8:00 p.m. ET matchup at Western Kentucky. Saturday's game between FIU and WKU will mark the 36th meeting all-time between the two teams as the Hilltoppers hold a commanding 31-5 lead. The last time these two teams met was on Jan. 17, as FIU fell, 65-58. Dennis Mavin paced FIU's offense with 21 points, while Daviyon Draper shot 7-of-11 for 15 points in the effort and picked up his first-career double-double.
