MIAMI (March 1, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (3-5) picked up a 5-2 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (2-6) on Sunday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.
With the win, FIU snaps a five-game losing skid and improves to 3-0 at home this season.
FIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles portion of the match. Senior
Yana Koroleva and sophomore
Nina Nagode defeated B-CU's Mina Matsuba and Maria Sablina, 6-3, while juniors
Carlotta Orlando and
Kaitlin Brozovich topped the Wildcat duo of Gaby Chinchilla and Chinatsu Kajiwara, 6-3.
FIU clinched the contest, winning the first three singles matches as Orlando defeated Sablina, 6-3, 6-1, Koroleva downed Matsuba, 6-4, 6-1, and freshman
Nerma Caluk won against Kajiwara, 6-1, 6-3.
Bethune-Cookman got on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 loss by sophomore
Valentina Briceno to Adei Masina. Brozovich gave FIU a 5-1 edge with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Chinchilla. Nagode closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 12-10 loss to Maria Garoz-Mareno.
The Panthers host Florida Gulf Coast on Monday, March 2. First serve is set for noon.
