FIU Women’s Tennis Tops No. 74 Marshall, 4-3, in Final Home Match

MIAMI (March 28, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (10-6) closed out its 2015 home slate with a 4-3 win over the No. 74-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd (11-7) on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers finished the year 10-1 at the FIU Tennis Courts.
 
With the match tied, 3-3, it came down to the result of junior Kailtin Brozovich and Kai Broomfield at the No. 4 position. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Brozovich battled back to take set two, 7-5. The Clarkston, Mich., native fell behind, 4-1, in set three, but rebounded to take the final frame, 6-4, and clinch the match for the Panthers.
 
Marshall took the opening point, winning the doubles portions of the match and extending its lead to 2-0 with a walkover victory as FIU played with only five. Senior Yana Koroleva got FIU on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Derya Turhan. Freshman Nerma Caluk followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anna Pomyatinskaya to tie the match a 2-2.
 
The Thundering Herd regained the lead, 3-2, following a loss by sophomore Valentina Briceno to Rachael Morales (6-2, 6-2). Sophomore Nina Nagode tied the match at 3-all, defeating Maddie Silver, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Brozovich took the three-set win to give FIU its fourth-straight victory, 4-3.
 
The win improves FIU to 4-0 versus Conference USA teams this season.
 
The Panthers will travel to Orlando, Fla., to take on the UCF Knights on Friday, April 3. First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET.
