FIU Women’s Tennis Advances to C-USA Semis; Defeats Blue Raiders, 4-3

IRVING, Texas (April 17, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (13-7) defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (19-4), 4-3, on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Conference USA Tennis Championships.   
 
The Blue Raiders took a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles points as freshman Nerma Caluk and junior Kaitlin Brozovich fell to Brittany Huxley and Nayara Moraes, 8-2, and junior Carlotta Orlando and sophomore Valentina Briceno lost to Jesse Grace and Sarah Sediri, 8-3.
 
FIU tied the match when senior Yana Koroleva defeated Tiffany William, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. Middle Tennessee regained the lead, 2-1, as Briceno fell to Sediri, 6-2, 6-1. The Panthers tied the match when Orlando downed Darya Shulzhanok, 6-4, 7-6 (6). The Blue Raiders took a 3-2 lead as Huxley defeated Caluk, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Nina Nagode won 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1 and Brozovich defeated Nayara Moraes, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to give FIU the victory.
 
FIU will next on the No. 1-seeded Rice Owls on Saturday in the tournament semifinals. The match is slated for 11 a.m. ET.
