HOUSTON (April 18, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (13-8) fell to the No. 30-ranked Rice Owls (15-8), 4-1, in the Conference USA Tennis Championship Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
Rice took a 1-0 lead winning the doubles portion of the match as junior
Carlotta Orlando and sophomore
Valentina Briceno lost to Solomiya Zinko and Savannah Durkin, 8-1, and the team of freshman
Nerma Caluk and junior
Kaitlin Brozovich fell to Alison Ho and Lindsey Hodge, 8-2.
The Owls extended their lead to 3-0 with two-straight singles wins. Briceno dropped a 6-3, 6-1, decision to Zinko and Brozovich lost to Durkin, 7-5, 6-1. FIU got on the board as senior
Yana Koroleva defeated the No. 21-ranked Natalie Beazant, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. Rice clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 loss by Orlando to Katherine Ip at the No. 2 position.
