Box Score MIAMI (Sept. 26, 2015) – The No. 24 FIU Men's Soccer (6-2-0) team won their sixth-straight match in a 5-1 victory against Conference-USA foe, Marshall (4-5-0), Saturday evening at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Fla.
The Panthers didn't waste any time taking a 1-0 lead in the 6
th minute of the match. The FIU goal was set up by
Paul Marie who split the defense and passed the ball to Marvin Hazel in traffic who knocked the header past the diving Marshall keeper, Bijan Golston.
FIU kept the pressure on the Marshall defense when Marie's point-blank shot was saved by the keeper in the 26
th minute. Shortly after, Marie regained control of the goalie's deflection and passed it to Nandi Batancur who blasted the ball into the lower-right corner of the net for a 2-0 FIU advantage. The goal was Batancur's fifth of the season and Marie's second assist of the match.
The Panthers defense didn't allow a Thundering Herd shot heading into the break.
In the second stanza, FIU went up 3-0 on a Marshall own goal in the 63
rd minute. FIU's
Darren Rios crossed the ball to the middle of the box when Marshall's Arthur Duchesne knocked the ball into his own net attempting to clear the ball.
In the 73
rd minute, Rios scored his third goal of the season off a corner kick. The goal was set up when
Ismael Longo launched the corner to
Jamar Campion-Hinds who was stationed near the right side of the goal. Campion-Hinds then sent the ball to Rios who shot a header past Golston to give the Panthers a commanding 4-0 lead.
Luca Giovine put the Panthers up 5-0 the 86
th minute of the match, beating Golston one-on-one for his second goal of the season. He was assisted by Hezel on the play.
Marshall's lone goal of the match came in the 87
th minute when Chris Tabi scored on a rebound off the cross bar from Austin Klueh.
FIU bested Marshall 19-4 in shots and 10-2 in shots on goal. FIU keeper
Robin Spiegel saved one shot, running his overall record in 2015 to 4-1-0.
The No. 24 FIU Panthers will return to the pitch on Sept. 29, when they travel to Orlando, Fla., to take on the UCF Knights. FIU's next home match is scheduled for October 3 at 7:00 p.m., against the Charlotte 49ers at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Fla.
