FT. MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2016) – Sophomore
Nerma Caluk scored the match-clinching point in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, as the FIU women's tennis team (1-0) swept the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (0-1), 4-0, on Saturday afternoon from the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The victory marked the third-straight, season-opening win for the Panthers, and improved FIU to 4-1 all-time versus the Eagles.
The match, originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, was moved back to 4 p.m. due to high winds.
Once action got underway, FIU wasted no time, taking the first point of the day with two-straight doubles victories. The duo of freshman
Maryna Veksler and junior
Nina Nagode defeated Elizabeth Means and Julia Acusa, 6-3, while the tandem of senior
Carlotta Orlando and redshirt freshman
Andrea Lazaro downed Julianna Curtis and Joselyn Treyes Albarracin, 6-4.
In singles action, FIU won three-straight to take the victory, 4-0. Nagode topped Acusa, 6-2, 6-2, Lazaro defeated Curtis, 6-0, 6-4, and Caluk sealed the victory with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Treyes Albarracin.
The Panthers will next host the Troy Trojans on Friday, Jan. 29. First serve from the FIU Tennis Courts is 2:30 p.m.
