DeLAND, Fla. (Feb. 6, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team (2-1) made quick work of the Stetson Hatters (1-2) winning, 7-0, on Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Panthers not only took the doubles point of the contest but won all six singles matches in straight sets.
FIU began the day with three-straight doubles victories to take the first point. The duo of senior
Carlotta Orlando and redshirt freshman
Andrea Lazaro took the first match with a 6-1 win over Arijana Korac and Carolina Meregalli. Freshman
Maryna Veksler and junior
Nina Nagode defeated Eveline Lepinay and Maja Salibasic, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point. The Panthers completed the doubles sweep as senior
Kaitlin Brozovich and sophomore
Nerma Caluk downed Alexe Viaud and Alexandra Lyubimova, 6-3.
Lazaro gave FIU a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lyumbimova. Orlando extended the Panthers' lead to 3-0, defeating Korac, 6-3, 6-0. FIU clinched the match with Nagode's 13
th win of the season, topping Salibasic, 6-1, 6-3. FIU continued to dominate the match, winning the next three singles matches for the shutout, 7-0. Brozovich defeated Brittany Hill, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Veklser's 6-2, 6-3 win over Lepinay. The win was Veksler's team-leading 17
th singles win of the season. Caluk closed out the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Meregalli.
The victory improved FIU to 19-5 all-time versus the Hatters and marked the Panthers' second-straight win over Stetson.
FIU will face Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, Feb. 7, in DeLand, Fla. First serve is scheduled noon.
