MIAMI (March 17, 2016) – The No. 57-ranked FIU women's tennis team (12-2) won its fifth home match of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Yale Bulldogs (5-7) on Thursday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.
Sophomore
Nerma Caluk earned her 24
th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Courtney Amos to clinch the match and give the Panthers their 12
th win of the season.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point. Yale took 2-of-3 in doubles competition with the duo of redshirt freshman
Andrea Lazaro and senior
Carlotta Orlando defeating Yale's Ree Ree Li and Carol Finke, 6-3. Freshman
Maryna Veksler and junior
Nina Nagode fell to Tina Jiang and Madeleine Hamilton, 6-4, while Caluk and senior
Kaitlin Brozovich lost to Sherry Li and Caroline Lynch, 6-3.
Singles play saw both teams battle to tie the score at 3-3 as Hamilton defeated Veksler, 6-2, 6-4, Nagode topped Jiang, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, Lazaro beat R. Li., 6-1, 6-3, Orlando defeated S. Li, 7-5, 6-1, and Brozovich fell to Amy Yang, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Caluk decided the match with her win in straight-sets over Amos.
The Panthers will host UW Milwaukee on Friday, March 18. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
