@FIUWBB Plays to a Halftime Stalemate, but Falls in Second at Georgetown

Box Score Game Details
Georgetown 77, FIU 56.
Records: FIU 2-5, Georgetown 4-3.
Wednesday, November 29 | 7 p.m. | Washington, D.C. | McDonough Memorial Gym

  • FIU weathered early Georgetown runs to force a 31-all halftime tie, but the Hoyas controlled the boards and outshot the Panthers in the second half for a 77-56 win at McDonough Memorial Gym Wednesday night in women's basketball action. FIU falls to 2-5 on the season, while Georgetown is now 4-3. The game marked the first of three-straight road games in the mid-Atlantic this week.
  • Freshman Shante Walker (West Park, Florida / South Broward HS) had her first 20-point game to lead the Panthers in scoring. She added eight rebounds to lead FIU in both categories. She was 7-for-11 from the field and hit three three-point field goals.
  • The team that shot on the South basket had the lower field goal percentage in each half. Unfortunately, that was the second half for FIU. The Panthers mustered a .308 shooting mark in the second half, about 70 percentage points worse than the first
  • The Hoyas got off quickly with a few three-point field goals, but the FIU defense tightened, holding Georgetown without a field goal in the final 4:51 of the period. The Panthers outshot GU .375 to .211 in the period and held a 14-13 lead.
  • The second quarter saw multiple lead changes, and the score settled at 31 for both squads. Walker was the first person to 10 points in the contest, and FIU held a .394 to .278 shooting edge at intermission.
  • The second half saw the Panthers connect on just eight field goals, only three in the fourth quarter, as Georgetown hit .429 and .643 in the final two periods to build the lead and extend to the game's final margin.
  • Redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) finished with 15 points and six rebounds. She hit put-back buckets on two of her three offensive rebounds. Junior Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama) finished with nine points, six rebounds and a season-best seven assists.

Stat of the Game
FIU had a 25-21 rebounding edge at halftime, but finished with a 12-rebound deficit (49-37) by the game's end.

From the Sideline
"We played one really good half of basketball tonight," said FIU Head Coach Tiara Malcom. "We executed our offense and defended them and rebounded. I was very proud of that. But, I have to remind myself of our youth sometimes, when I look out and have four freshmen on the court at one time. We had some breakdowns, with a missed layup on our end, then a foul on the other end. Georgetown is a veteran group and they knew what to do in a game like that. I am still excited when we listen and execute and make these small improvements."

Next Up
FIU stays in the nation's Capital, and will take on Howard on Saturday at 2 p.m. The road trip finishes with a jaunt to Baltimore, and a Monday afternoon contest with Morgan State.
