DENTON, Texas (February 10, 2017) -- Saturday concludes the two-game Texas road trip for FIU women's basketball when the Panthers face North Texas at 4 p.m. Eastern from The Super Pit in Denton.
Â
The Panthers enter Saturday with a 5-17 overall mark, 3-8 in Conference USA. The Mean Green are 8-14 overall, 5-6 in C-USA.
Â
In an odd quirk, the series is completely even, dating back to Sun Belt Conference competition. In the 20-game series history, both teams are 10-10, including 9-9 as conference opponents, 5-5 in Miami, 4-4 in Denton and 1-1 on neutral courts. Also, each team has a pair of three-game win streaks against the other, but the first four-game win streak is on the line Saturday, as North Texas has won the last three in the series, which began in 2001.
Â
FIU played a terrific half at Rice on Thursday, but a 26-6 third quarter was the difference as the Owls won by 19 (74-55) in Houston in the first game of the road trip. Senior
Janka Hegedus (Budapest, Hungary) tied her career-highs with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Redshirt sophomore
Kiandre'a Pound also produced a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. It was the most productive day by the post players as a tandem for the season.Â
Â
The last time FIU had two players with a double-double was at Marshall on January 15, 2015 when Pound (15 and 11) and Marita Davydova (11 and 10) did it in a six-point road loss in Huntington, West Virginia.
Â
The Panthers have two players averaging double-digit points. Hegedus scores 10.5 per game and sophomore
Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama) averages 12.5 per game. Hudson is also one of seven players with 100 assists already this season. Her 4.7 assists average puts her seventh in the league to date.
Â
North Texas led by five at home Thursday over Florida Atlantic, but put up a 41-24 second half to run away with the 79-57 victory. UNT shot .515 in the game and four players scored in double figures, led by Tyara Warren's 18 points.
Â
The Mean Green scoring leader is Terriell Bradley, who averages 13.4 point-per-game. She also has more than any other two UNT players in both free throws made and attempted. She is on pace to become the third player in the league to 100 free throws made this season.
Â
FIU will host a pair of Conference USA games in Miami next weekend.
