NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2017) – The FIU women's tennis team (4-1) recorded its second-straight road victory with a 4-3 win over Columbia (1-4) on Saturday afternoon from the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in New York.
FIU put the match away early earning the doubles point and winning three-straight singles contests for a 4-0 lead. With doubles wins by
Andrea Lazaro and
Nina Nagode (6-3 over Adi Milstein and Alexandra Solovyev), and
Mina Markovic and
Gabriela Ferreira (6-2 over Ali Pollack and Renee Ren), the Panthers took a 1-0 lead to begin the match.
Maryna Veksler earned her team-leading 11
th win of the season with 6-1, 6-3 result versus Solovyev, making the score 2-0. Lazaro (ranked No. 54 by the ITA) downed Rima Asatrian, 6-2, 6-3, extending the Panthers' lead to 3-0. The victory improved the Barcelona, Spain, native's career record in dual matches to 21-1. Grib defeated Ren, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the match for FIU and give the Panthers their fourth win of the season.
Playing the match out, Columbia got on the board, winning three tie breaks. Nagode fell to Andrea Kevakian, 7-6, 3-6, 10-2, Markovic fell to Pollack, 7-6, 1-6, 10-8, and
Nerma Caluk lost to Milstein, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9.
FIU will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the Panthers host Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee. First serve from the FIU Tennis Courts is 1:00 p.m.
