Seven was the number for FIU Friday night at the FIU ballpark. The Panthers pounced on Charleston Southern for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to soar past the Buccaneers and win their seventh consecutive game. FIU is now 9-6 and CSU drops to 8-4.
However, before the Panthers could conquer the Buccaneers they had to climb out of an early 5-0 hole. CSU scored five runs off FIU starter
Andrew George in 1 1/3 innings before the left-hander was lifted.
FIU chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the second and single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Down 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, FIU took its first lead of the game scoring four runs.
Zack Soria led off the frame with a line drive solo home run to left.
Adam Sevario and
Zach Files each singled.
Irving Lopez drilled a two-run double into the left center field gap scoring Sevario and Files to tie the score 7-7.
Javier Valdes put the Panthers ahead with an RBI single plating Lopez.
CSU regained the lead 8-7 in the top of the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles by Jason Miller and Brandon Gragilla off FIU reliever
Alex Demchak.
Chandler Raiden ended the inning striking out Mike Sconzo. Raiden (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the win.
In the bottom of the eighth, FIU teed off on CSU closer Cody Smith. Bucs left-hander Eddie Hiott (1-1) hit Lopez with a pitch to start the inning and was pulled for Smith.
The Panthers sent 10 batters to the plate against Smith and scored seven runs in the eighth. After Lopez, Valdes reached on a throwing error and
Christian Khawam got an infield single to load the bases. FIU took the lead, 9-8, when Smith walked Soria with the bases loaded.
Then three consecutive hits busted the game wide open.
Nick Day and Sevario each had RBI singles. Files launched a two-run home run to left center and FIU led 15-8.
Sevario was 4 for 4 with three RBI and now leads the team with a .421 batting average. Day was 3 for 4. Lopez was also 3 for 4 with his second long ball of the season and three RBI. Files went 2 for 3 with his third home run of the season.
